Net metering is one of the biggest reasons solar makes financial sense in Pakistan. It lets you sell surplus solar energy back to the grid, so you're billed only for your net consumption. Here's how it works and how to get it.
What is net metering?
During the day your panels often produce more electricity than you use. With a bi-directional meter, that surplus flows back to the grid and you earn credit. At night or on cloudy days you draw from the grid, and your bill is calculated on the net difference — sometimes reducing it to almost zero.
Who can apply?
- Connections of 1 kW up to 1 MW are eligible under NEPRA's net-metering regulations
- You need a three-phase connection for most systems (single-phase for very small ones)
- Your sanctioned load should be equal to or greater than your solar system size
The application process
- Install a net-metering-ready solar system through a licensed company
- Submit the application and documents to your DISCO (IESCO, LESCO, K-Electric, FESCO, HESCO, etc.)
- The DISCO inspects the installation and approves the agreement
- A bi-directional meter is installed and your net-metering goes live
The paperwork can be slow if you do it yourself — which is why APS Engineering handles the entire net-metering application and approval on your behalf, from documentation to the final meter installation.
How much can it save?
Combined with a correctly sized system, net metering helps most clients offset 70–100% of their electricity bill. Talk to us for a free assessment of your net-metering potential.
